In 2019, the Chinese Ministry of Education officially approved the establishment of BNU Zhuhai by Beijing Normal University.

In 2017, a cooperation agreement was signed by BNU, the Guangdong Provincial Government, and the Zhuhai Municipal Government on jointly building Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai (BNU Zhuhai).

Between 2009 and 2011, BNU set up the Zhuhai Research Institute, the Zhuhai Branch of Graduate School (the enrollment of graduate students started in 2011), and the Zhuhai Branch of University Science and Technology Park.

In 2003, BNU Zhuhai Campus was renamed Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai (BNUZ) and became an independent institute.

In 2002, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of BNU Zhuhai Education Park via File No. 47. In the same year, BNU Zhuhai Campus welcomed its first batch of undergraduate students.

In 2001, a cooperation agreement on jointly building Zhuhai Campus was signed between Beijing Normal University (BNU) and Zhuhai Municipal Government.
