Beijing Normal University (BNU) is home to a diverse group of international students from countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, each bringing unique dreams and aspirations. These students, united by their shared goal of learning and growth, gather in this esteemed university—a place rich in history and tradition. Within the picturesque campus nestled in the Phoenix Valley, they not only showcase their vibrant cultural heritage but also embrace and contribute to the rich tapestry of China's traditions and values.
Today, we celebrate the achievements of four exceptional international graduates who have been recognized as 2024's Outstanding International Graduates of BNU. Among them is Lenox Emmanuel , also known by his Chinese name Li Si, an international student from Sierra Leone pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Administration at Belt and Road School of BNU. An outstanding student, Lenox has earned numerous accolades, including being appointed as a “Phoenix Ambassador,” receiving the Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship, and being honored as a “Health Star” for his excellence in sports. Additionally, he actively represented students in the 10th-anniversary celebrations of the Belt and Road Initiative and participated in the 5th BNU Belt and Road Forum.
Academic Excellence and Campus Contributions
Lenox has demonstrated a strong commitment to his academic studies, consistently ranking among the top students in his program. While serving as a teaching assistant, he collaborated closely with faculty members, staff, and fellow students to support course delivery and enhance the learning experience.
Passion for Sports and Extracurricular Activities
A dedicated sports enthusiast, Lenox has taken part in almost every sports competition on campus, securing victories in several major events. His athletic achievements earned him the prestigious title of “Health Star.” Beyond competitive sports, he has actively engaged in various research and study programs organized by the university, including fieldwork on China’s socioeconomic development.
Dedication to Public Service and Volunteerism
Beyond his studies and sports, Lenox is also passionate about community service. He has volunteered at the 6th China Education Innovation Expo and participated in local outreach programs such as the birthday celebration for senior citizens in Zhuhai’s Guantang community. Additionally, he served as a football coach during the “Sun Cup” tournament at Zhuhai Experimental School of BNU , mentoring and supporting young students in their athletic pursuits.
Insights and Aspirations
When asked about his decision to study at BNU, Lenox shared that his father’s visit to China in 2012 inspired him to experience the country firsthand. “My father traveled to China for business and tourism, and when he returned, he told us about the rapid development he had witnessed. Since then, I have always wanted to come and see China for myself,” he said.
He chose BNU specifically for its strong academic offerings in political science, history, and management, as these fields align with his passion for public administration and international relations.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Lenox highlighted the invaluable leadership knowledge he gained at BNU Zhuhai. “One of my biggest takeaways has been the lessons on leadership. Our instructors included former leaders from Belt and Road countries, who taught us how leaders emerge and how they handle challenges. This knowledge will be incredibly useful for my future career.”
Looking ahead, Lenox envisions a future that blends his love for sports and international diplomacy. His immediate goal is to establish a sports consultancy firm. A few years down the line, he hopes to serve at the Sierra Leonean Embassy in China, further strengthening ties between the two nations.
Lenox Emmanuel’s journey at BNU exemplifies a well-rounded commitment to academic excellence, sportsmanship, and public service. As he embarks on the next chapter of his career, his achievements and aspirations stand as a testament to the transformative power of international education and cross-cultural exchange.
