Celebrating the Success of 2024’s Outstanding International Graduates at BNU --Do Thi Duyen: A Journey of Academic Excellence and Volunteerism at BNU

Beijing Normal University (BNU) is home to a diverse group of international students from countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, each bringing unique dreams and aspirations. These students, united by their shared goal of learning and growth, gather in this esteemed university—a place rich in history and tradition. Within the picturesque campus nestled in the Phoenix Valley, they not only showcase their vibrant cultural heritage but also embrace and contribute to the rich tapestry of China's traditions and values.

Today, we celebrate the achievements of four exceptional international graduates who have been recognized as 2024's Outstanding International Graduates of BNU. Among them is Do Thi Duyen (杜氏缘) from Vietnam, an outstanding student at Belt and Road School of BNU. Known for her academic excellence, she has actively participated in various university events, including serving as a speaker at the "World Youth Dialogue" and "Chasing Dreams Together in the Valley" events hosted by BNU’s School of Foreign Languages. Additionally, she has engaged in multiple volunteer activities both on and off campus.

Academic Excellence and Dedication to Learning

Do Thi Duyen ranks among the top students in her program and is always willing to help her peers navigate academic challenges. Her enthusiasm for learning extends beyond the classroom, as she strives to create a supportive learning environment for her fellow students.

A Memorable Volunteer Experience

When asked about an unforgettable volunteer experience, Duyen shared her time teaching English to medical staff at the university clinic. “We learned words and phrases related to common student illnesses and tried to understand the challenges healthcare workers face in their daily routines. After learning about their work, we also shared our experiences of living in Zhuhai. Later, I heard from classmates that the medical staff had started communicating with them in English. I truly appreciate their dedication to learning. Even though my contribution was small, I felt that I had made a meaningful impact by bridging the gap between international students and university staff through language.”

Overcoming Challenges in Studies

One of the biggest challenges Duyen faced was adapting to a multicultural classroom environment. “At first, it was difficult to establish harmony among classmates from diverse cultural backgrounds. However, through open and honest communication, sharing our cultural traditions, and understanding each other’s perspectives, we developed a strong sense of unity. Over time, we became friends who support one another in both academic and personal life.”

A Message to BNU Before Graduation

As graduation approaches, Duyen expresses her heartfelt gratitude to BNU and Belt and Road School. “I want to thank Beijing Normal University, Belt and Road School, our knowledgeable and dedicated professors, and all the staff members at BNU Zhuhai for their care and support over the past two years. Studying and living here has been an invaluable experience for us.”

Do Thi Duyen’s journey at BNU reflects a remarkable blend of academic success, cross-cultural engagement, and a deep commitment to volunteer service. As she embarks on her next journey, she carries with her the lessons and memories from her time at BNU Zhuhai.
