Celebrating the Success of 2024’s Outstanding International Graduates at Beijing Normal University -- Romana Akhter

Beijing Normal University (BNU) is home to a diverse group of international students from countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, each bringing unique dreams and aspirations. These students, united by their shared goal of learning and growth, gather in this esteemed university—a place rich in history and tradition. Within the picturesque campus nestled in the Phoenix Valley, they not only showcase their vibrant cultural heritage but also embrace and contribute to the rich tapestry of China's traditions and values.

Today, we celebrate the achievements of four exceptional international graduates who have been recognized as 2024's Outstanding International Graduates of BNU. Among them is Romana Akhter, an international student from Bangladesh who has demonstrated outstanding academic and extracurricular success.

Romana Akhter: From Bangladesh to BNU's 2024 Outstanding International Graduate

Romana Akhter's academic journey began in her home country, where she developed a strong interest in business studies from an early age. With a keen focus on economic trends and financial forecasting, Romana pursued a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration (BBA) at BGC Trust University in Bangladesh, majoring in Finance and minoring in Accounting. She later continued her studies at Belt and Road School, majoring in Business Administration at Beijing Normal University (BNU), where she was named the 2024 Outstanding International Graduate. Her strong academic performance has been a defining feature of her studies at BNU.

Beyond academics, Romana has built an impressive portfolio of professional experience. She worked as a researcher at Nielsen Research Firm, Bangladesh Ltd., where she conducted surveys and analyses of both rural and urban regions. This experience not only enhanced her communication and research skills but also contributed to her academic pursuits.

Romana has been equally dedicated to community service and volunteer work. She participated in numerous university activities, including the 6th China Education Innovation Expo, freshman orientations, and the Guan Tang Community Elderly Birthday Celebration.

Her dedication was recognized through multiple accolades, including the Outstanding International Student Volunteer Award and Zhuhai's "Good Samaritan and Courageous Acts " Award.

Her active involvement extended to international platforms as well, where she represented BNU at prestigious events such as the "2024 China Global Education Cooperation Forum" and the 5th BNU Belt and Road Forum. She also participated in Chinese language recitation events during the 2023 "International Chinese Language Day."

Looking ahead, Romana is determined to further her academic career by pursuing a PhD, with a focus on business administration and economics. She is committed to contributing to her field and making a positive impact in the world.

Q&A with Romana Akhter

Q1: What are your most memorable experiences at BNU Zhuhai?

"The beautiful campus environment stands out to me the most. Every morning, when I wake up and look out over the lush greenery and distant mountains, I feel a deep sense of peace and connection with nature. The university's support for international students has also left a lasting impression on me, as has the meticulous organization of events. Overall, studying here has been an incredible privilege, and I am immensely grateful for this opportunity."

Q2: What challenges did you encounter during your studies, and how did you overcome them?

"Before coming to China, I was concerned about the challenges I might face. However, I have been fortunate to receive unwavering support from both my professors in China and abroad. I am particularly grateful to my advisor, Dr. Chen Zhihua, whose guidance has helped me develop my research in economics. Additionally, Professor Pompeo Della Posta from Italy has not only been a mentor but also a friend, providing invaluable career advice."

Q3: Your story of bravery was once featured on the university's public platform. How has this experience impacted your life?

"The recognition I received for this act of bravery has inspired me to take on more responsibility in life. It has made me more humble and reinforced my determination to make a positive impact on others' lives. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to society, and I will continue striving to live up to the expectations others have of me."

Q4: What are your future plans after graduation?

"My immediate goal is to pursue a PhD, which will provide me with an opportunity to explore my research areas further and contribute to the academic community. I also plan to continue my volunteer work, helping those in need. My mother once told me, ‘When you give a rose to others, the fragrance remains in your hand’ I am deeply thankful for my time at BNU, which has shaped me into who I am today. As I embark on the next chapter of my life, I will carry forward the knowledge and values I have gained here and continue to make a positive impact on the world."
