Renowned Author Yu Hua Illuminates BNU Zhuhai with Literary Insights

Over the weekend, BNU Zhuhai welcomed literature enthusiasts for an engaging series of literary events headlined by celebrated author Yu Hua. The event included speeches, public seminars, and forums, underscoring BNU's dedication to literature education and enriching Zhuhai's vibrant cultural landscape.

The series commenced on the afternoon of November 2nd at the Liyin Building A111 Lecture Hall with a focus on Chinese creative writing. Chaired by BNU Professor Yu Hua, an acclaimed writer in contemporary Chinese literature, the session, titled "How Can Literary Education Be Effective," brought together over a dozen respected writers, critics, and literary editors, as well as young authors fostered by International Center for Writing of BNU.

Yu Hua shared insightful reflections on the evolution of Chinese creative writing as an academic field, offering perspectives on advancing literature education and improving writing instruction. His remarks—marked by sharp insights and humor—earned enthusiastic applause.

Young writers in attendance shared personal journeys and reflections, emphasizing the role of formal literary education in honing aesthetic sensibilities. They spoke fondly of mentorship from renowned authors like Mo Yan, Su Tong, and Yu Hua himself, highlighting how these influences shaped their creative development.

Later that evening, Yu Hua delivered an inspiring lecture titled "the Grievances of Nine and Ninety: Anton Chekhov's Vanka and Halldór Laxness's Black Carp." Yu Hua examined the poignant stories of a young boy and an elderly woman, creatively juxtaposing the "grievances" of nine-year-old Vanka from Russian author Anton Chekhov's story with those of ninety-year-old Kaddi from Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness's work. Through this comparison, Yu Hua revealed the profound emotional landscapes that authors can evoke in short stories, sparking laughter and admiration from the audience.

This event not only provided a platform for intellectual exchange but also underscored the university's commitment to promoting literary appreciation and enriching the cultural fabric of Zhuhai. The event left attendees inspired and eager for future gatherings, marking a successful celebration of literature that resonated with both seasoned literary figures and emerging voices.
