Students from Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai (BNU Zhuhai ) achieved outstanding results in the 2025 Mathematical Contest in Modeling/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM), securing their best performance since the campus began participating in the prestigious competition.
Organized by the Department of Mathematics under BNU’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, 64 teams comprising 192 students from 15 majors—competed in this year’s contest. Their efforts earned three Finalist (F Award) prizes, five Meritorious Winner (M Award) prizes, and 30 Honorable Mention (H Award) prizes, resulting in a remarkable 59% overall award rate.
First organized in 1985, the MCM/ICM is one of the most influential mathematical modeling competitions worldwide. This year’s event, held from January 24 to 28, 2025, attracted 27,456 teams from over 30 countries and regions. With stringent evaluation criteria, only 0.16% of participants received the top Outstanding Winner award, while 1.80% earned the Finalist title, 6.45% claimed the Meritorious Winner, and 23.18% secured Honorable Mention recognition.
BNU Zhuhai’s teams stood out in the fiercely competitive contest. Three teams won the Finalist Award: 1) Huang Yuqing, Ye Yunxi, and Zhang Xinyan (Advisor: Liao Zhongwei); 2) Li Xia, Lin Qingrong, and Chen Yanjin (Advisor: Jin Yu); and 3) Zhang Hongkai, Zhou Xinqi, and Hu Qingmiao (Advisor: Jin Yu). These teams placed among the top 2% of global participants. Additionally, five teams received the Meritorious Winner award and thirty teams received Honorable Mention.Despite the competition coinciding with the Spring Festival holiday, the university provided comprehensive logistical support and technical assistance to ensure the teams’ success. The Department of Mathematics has long upheld a teaching philosophy based on ”learning through competition and teaching through competition” . This year’s exceptional results demonstrate the success of the department's innovative approach to talent development. Moving forward, BNU Zhuhai plans to further strengthen its integrated educational model combining competition, teaching, and research, cultivating globally competitive mathematical talent.
About MCM/ICM:
The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) challenge university students to solve real-world problems using mathematical modeling, data analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration within a 96-hour timeframe.
