On November 21st, the fourth session of Spark Salon—an English-language academic salon for faculty members organized by the International Office of Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai (BNU Zhuhai)—was held at the Lishen Xuan.

Dr. Tore Hoel, Distinguished Research Fellow at the College of Education for the Future at BNU and Senior Research Fellow at Oslo Metropolitan University (Norway), was invited as the guest speaker. Under the theme “Making AI Work for You as a Researcher and Teacher: Tools, Practices, and Lessons to Be Shared,” he explored with about 20 Chinese and international faculty members from various departments how AI can break down language barriers, innovate research methods, and enhance cross-cultural collaboration. The session featured lively exchanges and dynamic interactions.

In his presentation, Dr. Hoel shared insights into how AI tools have evolved from translation aids to core collaborative resources, drawing on his extensive cross-cultural research experience. He noted that in his early research based in China, “poetic but often inaccurate translations” hindered the efficiency of academic exchange and data collection—issues now largely resolved by generative AI and localized tools. Examples included real-time translation devices and an intelligent Chinese paper analysis system based on RAG technology. He also shared practical tips for tools such as Obsidian and LM Studio, and emphasized the value of local AI models in ensuring privacy and supporting teaching.

During the Q&A session, participants shared their experiences and challenges in applying AI, discussing topics such as AI ethics, academic standards, and tool selection. Dr. Hoel provided thorough responses to each question.
Spark Salon was initiated by the International Office of BNU Zhuhai with the aim of promoting integration between Chinese and international faculty, breaking down disciplinary and cultural barriers, and providing a regular platform for learning and exchange to enhance academic diversity on campus. Future sessions will be held on a regular basis to further interdisciplinary collaboration, supporting the internationalization of BNU Zhuhai and its cultivation of innovative talent.
